Youth and Credit: Protecting the Credit of Youth in Foster Care

This guide provides concrete advice for implementing the federal “credit check requirement”, which was authorized by Congress in 2011 to address identity theft for youth in foster care.  Written with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and in collaboration with the Credit Builders Alliance, the guide recommends that adults working with young people use the credit check requirement as an opportunity to help young people understand what credit is and why it is important to their future financial stability. The report is complemented by a Q&A document on Implementation of the Credit Check requirement, along with an infographic, Implementing the Credit Check Mandate.
